Sixty million euro has been stolen from bank accounts in a massive cyber bank raid after fraudsters raided dozens of financial institutions around the world.

"The fraudsters' objective in these attacks is to siphon large amounts from high balance accounts, hence the name chosen for this research - Operation High Roller,"

 

"If all of the attempted fraud campaigns were as successful as the Netherlands example, the total attempted fraud could be as high as 2bn euro (£1.6bn)

As hackers step up attacks on law firms, attorneys are being forced to master a subject few of them studied in law school: cybersecurity.

Lawyers, who increasingly rely on email, smartphones and other mobile devices to handle deals and other confidential matters, are being asked to encrypt messages, resist using free Wi-Fi connections, which can allow hackers to eavesdrop on communications, and regard even text messages as potential security threats.

  TechRadar User database gets Hacked

After LinkedIn, Last.Fm and eHarmony, now it’s TechRadar’s turn to admit that cybercriminals have gained access to its user database. As a result of the attack, usernames, encrypted passwords, email addresses and birth dates have been stolen.

 

“Our IT team has identified the cause of the problem and has taken action to rectify it,” Nick Merritt, publisher at TechRadar, explained.

 

In the meantime, the forums have been shut down and will remain that way until the company’s representatives are certain that all the security holes are properly patched up.

 

Impacted customers will be contacted and advised to change all the passwords that are similar to the ones used to protect their TechRadar accounts

  A monetary penalty notice of £225,000 has been served to Belfast Health and Social Care Trust following a serious breach of the Data Protection Act. The breach led to the sensitive personal data of thousands of patients and staff being compromised. The Trust also failed to report the incident to the ICO.

  Two former employees of UK mobile operator T-Mobile who illegally stole and sold select customer data from the company in 2008 have been ordered to pay a total of £73,700 in confiscation orders and costs as part of a hearing at Chester Crown Court.

  A monetary penalty for £90,000 has been served to Telford & Wrekin Council for two serious breaches of the seventh data protection principle. A Social Worker sent a core assessment report to the child’s sibling instead of the mother. The assessment contained confidential and highly sensitive personal data. Whilst investigating the first incident, a second incident was reported to the ICO involving the inappropriate disclosure of foster carer names and addresses to the children’s mother. Both children had to be re-homed.

  A monetary penalty notice for £325,000 has been served on Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust following the discovery of highly sensitive personal data belonging to tens of thousands of patients and staff – including some relating to HIV and Genito Urinary Medicine patients – on hard drives sold on an Internet auction site in October and November 2010.
